Day10

We talked about our upcoming grading conferences and then did our introduction to Inventor. One great thing about today is that my interns (I have a senior assigned to each freshman class) finally got some work! They circulated and helped students problem solve when they got stuck. No pictures from class, but here’s one from after school robotics. It’s a ball shooter they are prototyping with VEX parts.

Day8

We did more multi view sketching today and another session of peer feedback. We made the “rubric” together and added it to our previous set of guidelines, then traded notebooks and checked the show others work. In one section we had extra time so we played a round of our mockups card game to practice brainstorming and concept sketching.

Day7

Today we did our first multi view sketches, had some practice time for sketching, and then more planning time for automatons. Looking forward to next class where groups will meet up with their counterparts in the 3D art class and team up for the automaton arts collaboration!

Day6

We continued practicing isometric sketching today. The peer feedback system we set up is paying off already. Everyone seems to be helping each other out and I don’t hear a lot of “that’s wrong”. It’s more specific like “you missed the shading in one part”. We also updated our notebooks and made sure everything is caught up in Classroom.

Day5

Isometric sketching Lesson today. I 3D printed this shape since we started the lesson with it and it was nice for the students to be able to hold it and manipulate it while sketching. We also did our first peer feedback session and I think it went pretty well. First we constructed a rubric by thinking about what a great sketch would look like. Then they traded notebooks and gave each other feedback based on the “success criteria” we made. Then we wrapped it up with a reflection in google classroom where I asked them about the feedback they gave and/or received.

Day4

Introduced HUNCH project today and then a quick intro to isometric sketching. We started with “draw a cube” which worked great because some drew it on a square grid and some drew on an iso grid. That led nicely into oblique vs isometric sketches.

Day3

Today we did the concept sketching activity in IED and also introduced the automaton project. Their sketches came out really good, so many of them (but not all) are art students too! The EDD class finished up their chairs and tested them. They moved on to brainstorming project ideas after that.

Day2

Mostly boring stuff today, went over syllabus, new HW policy, and set up google classroom. But to make up for it we played a round of “Mock-ups” as a class. It was pretty fun and we focused on brainstorming skills like “reserve judgment” and “encourage wild ideas”.

Day1

Intro Engineering started things off with the paper bridge challenge! That arc design was a first for me, they probably could’ve made it even longer with more time. 🤓

Engineering Design and Development started with the wikiseat project. I have them a “catalyst” and said “make a chair”. After a few minutes we were sawing boards and some had chairs that could hold 300 lbs by the end of the block (I made them test it).
